Protecting Palawan’s Marine Treasures

Palawan’s pristine beaches and crystal-clear waters are not just a haven for tourists but also a critical habitat for some of the world’s most endangered sea turtles. PBCAI is dedicated to protecting these magnificent creatures and their habitats through our Sea Turtle Conservation Campaign.

Why Sea Turtles Matter

Sea turtles play an essential role in maintaining the health of marine ecosystems. They help maintain the health of seagrass beds and coral reefs, providing key habitat for other marine life.

By preserving these ecosystems, sea turtles support biodiversity and the livelihoods of local communities.

Our Sea Turtle Conservation Initiatives

1. Nesting Beach Surveys in Palawan

In 2022, our team surveyed three key nesting beaches in Dumaran, Palawan. These efforts were crucial in identifying nesting sites and understanding the threats these turtles face. Despite challenges like poaching and habitat destruction, our dedicated volunteers continue to monitor these sites to protect nests and hatchlings.

2. Community Education and Engagement

We believe that conservation begins with education. Our team conducts regular information, education, and communication (IEC) activities across local communities. In Dumaran and Araceli, we've trained local volunteers to monitor beaches and protect nests. Educational sessions for soldiers in the Western Command have also been held, emphasizing the importance of sea turtles in marine ecosystems and equipping them with knowledge on how to handle and rescue turtles.

3. Hatchery Management for Sea Turtles

To combat the threat of predation and poaching, we've established ex-situ hatcheries in safer, higher grounds. Despite setbacks, such as nests being damaged by predators or poachers, we've successfully protected and hatched many sea turtle eggs, contributing to the recovery of these endangered species.

4. Plastic Reduction and Clean-up Drives

Plastic pollution is a significant threat to marine life. With support from SEETurtles, we've organized coastal clean-up activities in nesting sites along Puerto Princesa City's west coast. These efforts have removed hundreds of kilograms of waste, making the beaches safer for nesting turtles.

Success Stories in Sea Turtle Conservation

  • Nesting Surveys and Hatchery Success:
  • Community Participation: Our education programs have transformed local perceptions about sea turtles. Communities that once saw turtles as a threat to their livelihoods now actively participate in conservation efforts.
  • Plastic Clean-ups: Over ___ kilograms of plastic waste have been removed from critical nesting beaches, reducing threats to sea turtles and other marine life.
